Preparing For Kindergarten
FOSTERING INDEPENDENCE
- Being responsible for their own things – coats, backpacks, lunches
- Being responsible for their own supplies – materials, books, agendas to label, use, own
- Sign-in sheet as the day begins – recording their attendance
- Being responsible for their attire – tucking shirts in, being neat
- Using passes to go in pairs/groups to the library; checking out books
- PIN number for lunch – students eat on their own after first two weeks; take their own trays
- Walking to their classrooms every morning; to the bus and carpool line every afternoon
- Being responsible for their actions and character in all areas of the school – we use various methods for recording behavior, and sticker reward
- Listening to instructions on intercom, and updates on daily Cougar News
- Reading and writing on the first day of school
- Transportation – Carpool and Busing
- Students play an active role in their education – student-lead interaction
ENCOURAGING INPUT, FEEDBACK, QUESTIONS, INQUIRIES
- Circle time – students can share, ask questions, discuss
- Centers/Workshops – Students encouraged to develop stories, themes, discussion topics – open dialogue
- Praise and encouragement for their feedback
- Students praise and support their “friends”
- Teachers ask questions, students lead the discussion
- Students talk about how they are showing good character and helping others
- Show and Tell/Teach
